This special report outlines the current landscape of women’s leadership in academia and offers strategic recommendations to guide the next generation of women in science across Europe and beyond.
Women’s representation in most scientific fields is improving, but the senior ranks in academia are still dominated by men. This report is the result of a collaboration between the Elsevier Foundation, EWORA and the Science|Business Network. It provides recommendations to inspire action towards gender parity in science leadership across Europe. . The recommendations build on a series of podcast interviews, Breaking the glass ceiling: conversations with women leaders in academia, in which 15 prominent women rectors and presidents share their experience and ideas. It also draws on data from Elsevier’s latest report, Progress Toward Gender Equality in Research & Innovation — 2024 Review, and the views expressed by experts and guests during a panel discussion at the annual Science|Business conference in February 2024.
