Historically Black Colleges and Universities Schools of Nursing Scholarship Fund

Springboarding off the National League of Nursing/Elsevier HBCU Excellence in Technology Innovation programs, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Schools of Nursing Scholarship Fund aims to address pervasive health disparities. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are on the front lines of this challenge, laying the groundwork for thriving careers and supporting healthcare for a range of communities. With 107 HBCUs across the U.S., these academic institutions allow African American students to experience inclusive learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom to professional development and community building through a shared mission and sense of belonging.
What we do
The Elsevier Foundation provides annual funding to five HBCU nursing schools to support scholarships for students pursuing nursing degrees.
Each participating institution distributes the funds according to its students’ needs, helping reduce financial barriers while recognizing academic achievement and community engagement. By easing financial pressures, the scholarships allow students to focus more fully on their training and professional development.
How we deliver
The scholarship fund provides direct support to nursing students at participating HBCU institutions, including Winston-Salem State University, Tuskegee University, North Carolina A&T State University, Hampton University, and North Carolina Central University.
Since the program began, the initiative has helped fund dozens of scholarships across these institutions, supporting students as they progress through their nursing education and prepare to serve diverse communities across the United States.
