CWAST – Supporting women scientists in China

Across China, the number of women entering research careers has grown steadily over the past two decades. Yet representation at senior levels continues to lag behind, with persistent barriers limiting progression into leadership roles. As women advance in academia and research institutions, disparities become more pronounced, reinforcing structural challenges that restrict visibility, influence and opportunity.

The Elsevier Foundation partners with the China Women’s Association for Science and Technology (CWAST) to address these gaps at a pivotal career stage. Together, we focus on strengthening pathways for early- and mid-career women scientists to expand their professional networks, deepen their disciplinary engagement, and increase their participation in international research communities. By creating platforms for dialogue, mentorship and recognition, this collaboration contributes to a more inclusive research ecosystem in China and beyond.

What do we do

This partnership supports a series of targeted workshops and convenings designed to elevate women scientists within their respective fields. Through these forums, participants gain access to international discipline-specific networks, practical insights into research leadership, and opportunities to connect with journal editors, conference organizers and senior researchers.

The initiative also creates space for broader conversations on gender equity in science, encouraging engagement between researchers, policymakers, funders, evaluation institutions and media representatives. By fostering cross-sector dialogue, the program helps surface systemic barriers while highlighting solutions that enable women scientists to thrive and lead.

How do we deliver

Activities are anchored around high-profile scientific conferences and national forums, where dedicated workshops spotlight the expertise and experiences of accomplished women researchers. These sessions combine keynote contributions, panel discussions and interactive exchanges that promote peer learning and mentorship.
