Chemistry for Climate Action Challenge
Climate change is the most important challenge affecting the future of our planet as underscored by the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. The need for sustainable ideas to tackle global issues is now more pressing than ever, and chemistry can play a key role in finding practical solutions to urgent challenges, advancing the achievement of the UN SDG agenda.
A longstanding collaboration with Elsevier Chemistry journals, the Challenge raises awareness and builds global networks of researchers making crucial progress towards the SDGs. In addition to SDG13 Climate Action, the Challenge also supports SDG5 Gender Equality, recognizing the pivotal role that women play in combating climate change. The winning projects each receive a prize of $25,000.
What do we do
The Challenge highlights innovative projects that apply green chemistry principles to improve climate resilience, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable materials and circular economy approaches in the Global South. Beyond financial support, it provides visibility and connection—creating opportunities for international collaboration and encouraging the integration of sex and gender considerations in chemistry research.
How do we deliver
Researchers are invited to submit proposals demonstrating how sustainable chemistry can address climate-related challenges. Finalists present their work at the Elsevier Green & Sustainable Chemistry Conference, where winners are selected by an expert jury. The Foundation also convenes panel discussions to amplify emerging voices and explore how sustainable chemistry solutions can create tangible impact for communities in the Global South.
