Congratulations to Dr. Iris Blom on her appointment to the WHO Science Council

Congratulations to Dr. Iris M. Blom, an alumna of the Falling Walls Foundation Female Science Talents program that the Elsevier Foundation supports, on her appointment to the World Health Organization Science Council.

  • Iris Blom

Penholder of the Pan-European Commission on Climate and Health, WHO Europe

Dr. Blom is one of 21 scientists from every WHO region appointed to serve on the Science Council for the next two years, in a personal capacity. The Council advises WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on high-priority scientific questions and on advances with the potential to reshape global health. For the first time, early-career researchers are represented on the Council, through the WHO Youth Council.

Dr. Blom works at the intersection of climate change and health. She is based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where her work sits between evidence and decision-making. She is penholder for the Pan-European Commission on Climate and Health and co-chairs the resilience working group at the Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare, and has attended nine World Health Assemblies and every COP from COP25 to COP30.

We’re proud to count Dr. Blom among our Falling Walls Female Science Talents, and we’re looking forward to seeing her again in November at the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, where on November 7 she’ll moderate the panel “Science Beyond SDGs: Power, Priorities, Progress.”
